The Menominee American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 146 held its regular meeting on November 13 at the Legion Post. Shelly Kanyuh, chaplain, presented the opening prayer. Julie Erickson, president, extended a welcome to members. Julie Hendrick, secretary, presented the regular October 9 meeting minutes report, and Julie Erickson in absence of Cindy Smith, treasurer, detailed the financial report. Discussion followed on CD transfer of funds. The reports were placed on file for audit.
Committee Reports: Marjorie Albert, Cheer chairman, reported mailing cards to Mary Geniesee, Liz Scholtz, and Judy Reid. Judy Pier, Children and Youth chairman, reported on DAV fundraising auction held at the Pullman House, Menominee to support CASA, and DAV. The following members assisted at the welcome table with Pier: Judy Anderson, Joann Torreano and Loretta Doling. Judy Pier, extended a thank you to ALA members for supporting the Fall Gift Giving Tree for children and veterans in need. Discussion followed on adopting a local veteran and his family for Christmas, and the following members will assist Pier: Val Hallam, Joann Torreano, Barbara Kanyuh and Judy Anderson. Also, Judy Pier reported another project entitled "Snuggle up with a Book and Blanket" to be distributed for children at the Rainbow House and Abundant Life Mission Homeless Shelter. Sherry Nutter, Education chairman, informed ALA members that surplus school supplies were distributed to Blesch and Central school classrooms.
Julie Hendrick, Girls State chairman, introduced the following Menominee High School students that attended the June, 2018 Girls State program at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan: Annie Bauer, Kaitlyn Black, Jennifer Jones, Carley Kenney, Alexis Kaempf and Anna Magrane. The delegates shared their visual experiences, and extended appreciation to Unit 146 for the opportunity to attend Girls State. In addition, Hendrick reported receiving monetary donations from Menominee Kiwanis Club, Chem Design and Fincantieri Marinette Marine to support the upcoming 2019 Girls State program.
Connie Kewley, Historian, reported on past ALA member involvement, and events. Donna Lewis, Membership chairman, reported current membership at 201, and goal of 304 for 2019. Donna Lewis, Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation chairman displayed Christmas items purchased for veterans which will be distributed at Oscar G. Johnson Medical Center, Iron Mountain. Lewis extended a thank you to the following ALA members for participating in the project: Evie Koutnik, Dona Schrank, Julie Erickson and Cindy Smith. Jeannette Krause, Bar Committee chairman, reported credit cards, and gift cards are now available at Post 146. In addition, a sign-up sheet is available for Mardi Gras workers. Julie Erickson, Music chairman, recognized Dona Schrank's birthday. Evie Koutnik, Christmas Ball Raffle chairman, extended appreciation to ALA members for donating, and participating in the program which begins November 16 and ends January 1. Donna Lewis, Vice President, reported on the ALA catered Christmas Dinner featuring chicken and meatballs with all the trimmings to be held December 11; social hour - 5 p.m., dinner - 6 p.m. at the Legion Post. Dinner reservations need to be placed by November 30 to Donna Lewis at 906-863-1679. in addition, members are reminded to bring non-perishable items for the Rainbow House.
Julie Hendrick, secretary, read thank you correspondence from Bay Cliff Health Camp, Wanda Westman and Steve Van Eyck. Hendrick also reported monetary donations received for ALA Christmas Ball Raffle, and Wreaths Across America program from Post 146 Legionnaires and Sons of American Legion members.
Julie Erickson reported Wreaths Across America ceremony will take place December 1 at 10 a.m. in the Veterans Memorial Section, Riverside Cemetery, Menominee. ALA members are encouraged to attend and participate in the ceremony.
Julie Erickson reported on Standing Rules and Adoption Code of Ethics #3 correction for Unit 146 increasing membership dues as follows: Seniors - $40; Juniors - $5. The ALA approved correction. In other business, an American Eagle on the Unit's flag needs replacement, and following budgeted items were also approved: Emergency Voluntary Fund, Department Mandatory Dues, BAMC Love Light Tree, Christmas Angel Tree, Rainbow House, Salvation Army, Emergency Rescue Squad, and DAR Boys and Girls Club. Upcoming Events include: November 16 - January 1: Christmas Ball Raffle at Post 146; November 28: Potluck Dinner - 6 p.m.; December 1: Wreaths Across America ceremony at Riverside Cemetery -10 a.m.; December 11: ALA Christmas Dinner - social hour - 5 p.m.; dinner - 6 p.m.; January 8: ALA meeting - 6:30 p.m. at Legion Post.
The meeting concluded with a "Prayer for Peace".
