    The Menominee American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 146 held its regular meeting March 12 at the Legion Post, preceded by a potluck dinner, and serving of an ALA anniversary cake to commemorate its formation in 1919.

    Julie Erickson, president, extended a welcome to the ALA membership, and new member Tina Bunting.

    Julie Hendrick, secretary, presented the January 8 meeting minutes. Cindy Smith, treasurer, detailed the January and February financial reports. The reports were placed on file for audit.

    Committee Reports: Barbara Kanyuh, Americanism chairman, presented the story of the "Real Uncle Sam" to members. Marjorie Albert, Cheer chairman, mailed a card to Mary Wickman. Judy Pier, Children and Youth chairman, reported on the ongoing collection of miscellaneous items for the "Fall Warmth Tree", and books and blankets for Rainbow House. In addition, athletic equipment is being collected for DAR Boys/Girls Club. Also, Judy Pier reported Jaxson Smith, Marinette Middle School student will be nominated a "Local Hero" because of his hair donation to the Cancer Fund. Sherry Nutter, Education chairman, informed membership of ongoing collections for school supplies throughout the upcoming summer months, as well as Box Tops, and Campbell soup labels with a drop-off box provided at Post 146.

    Julie Hendrick, Girls State chairman, reported three applications have been received for review. Donna Lewis, membership chairman, reported 263 current paid members, and goal of 304. Connie Kewley, Historian, reported a file cabinet to file historic data in chronological order by year for easy access is being planned. Julie Hendrick reported that the ALA Scholarship Committee has received six applicants from graduating seniors for review. Since a new Bar Committee chairman is needed at the Post, Val Hallam volunteered. Evelyn Koutnik, Christmas Ball Raffle chairman, extended a thank you to the membership for contributions, and monetary donations to the raffle success as it supports the programs within the unit. Julie Erickson, Music chairman, acknowledged birthdays for Evelyn Koutnik and Margaret Hudon. Joann Torreano extended a thank you to the decorating committee for helping decorate Post 146 for the various holidays. Jane Raygo reported on flowers needed for Potter's Field, and membership approved the purchase.

    Commander Steve Fifarek reported that the District Summer Convention is scheduled June 14-15, and will take place at Legion Post 146. A discussion followed on volunteers needed for the event, and a sign-up sheet will be made available at the Post.

    A nominating committee consisting of ALA members Judy Anderson, Sherry Nutter and Joann Torreano will present the new 2019-2020 slate of officers at the April regular meeting.

    Julie Erickson, president, reported to membership that Year-End-Reports are needed by committee chairpersons, and she will be at the Legion Post on Tuesday, March 19 to collect.
The following budgeted items were approved by membership: Newspapers in Education, Walk for Warmth, Barb Palzewic Hope Memorial, and Menominee County ISD Imagination Library.

    Upcoming events include: March 27: Legion Post Potluck Dinner - 6 p.m.; April 9: ALA Meeting/Pizza Party - Social Hour - 4:30 p.m., Pizza Party - 5:30 p.m. ($5 donation), ALA meeting - 6:30 p.m. (slate of officers presented); April 24: Menominee Legion Red Waves Spaghetti Dinner at the Post - 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. (Cost: $8).


    The meeting concluded with a Prayer for Peace by Shelly Kanyuh, chaplain.
